Harlan County, wedged in a valley between two tree-lined ridge mountains in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, is both a beautiful place as well as one of the 25 poorest communities in the United States.
The mortality rate for drug overdoses in Harlan County is more than double the national average, the region’s personal income is $12,579, while the national average is $40,679, and Harlan County residents die significantly earlier than average Americans, with male life expectancies eight years shorter, and females seven shorter.
And most heartbreaking is that nine out of every ten elementary school children do not live with EITHER parent.
His Men Ministries supports The Meridzo Center, based in Harlan County. Meridzo's mission is "to simply 'Help People and Share Jesus,' through 14 area ministries, each serving as an avenue to meet people where they are, help them, and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ!"
This mission trip is specifically focused on serving Shekinah Village, a beautiful 35-acre youth camp/retreat center.
